If we as parents don't take a stand in shepherding our children's hearts ..

Who will?

I was particularly inspired this week by an elderly lady named Phyllis Burgess. She was attacked by G*y activists during their protest of the Prop. 8 amendment in California.

Alone, she peacefully held a cross and was there to support traditional marriage values. While there, she was spit on, verbally and physically assaulted, her cross was grabbed and stomped on breaking it into pieces, and this continued until the police were called. The elderly lady maintained a serene and non-combative attitude during the entire ordeal.

If this had been reversed and happened to one of the G*y activists (ie, being attacked, spit on etc..) by a conservative group can you imagine the headlines? As far as I can tell, this story has not been widely publicized.

As I tucked our children in bed this evening it really struck me how difficult it will be for them to maintain the values we hold true as our nation drifts further and further from Christ. It appears there is tolerance for almost anything except for conservative and or Christian viewpoints in many facets of our daily lives.

If almost 70 year old Phyllis Burgess can take a stand, so can I.

*A special note to Haley concerning her link here - Haley you have given us a very small glimpse of what Phyllis Burgess must have gone through that day and really triggered my thoughts above when I said goodnight to our children. For that, I am grateful.*

You can watch part of what happened to Phyllis Burgess HERE. It is well worth the few minutes it takes to view it. Be sure to watch the last half of the video as this is where you see her in great jeopardy.

Please consider passing on the link to the Burgess story. Thank you friends.

No doubt about it....it would be called a "hate crime" if the situation were reversed.

Don't worry about the bitterness and anger of other people directed toward you. You know that you stand for what is right and true. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. You are the one shining the light in the darkness.

And if it weren't for her link to your blog, I wouldn't have found you! I don't think her purpose was to bring you more friends....I think it was probably the opposite. But like I said before, you are shining light in the darkness.

I worry for our nation. For our kids. For what they'll have to face. I have a daughter and a son in college, and my daughter has told me that there are so many kids on the college campus that think it would be okay if socialism took hold here. She has to listen to her history professor berate Christianity on a daily basis.

So hang in there, Susan. We'll do what we can!

Once again, THANK you Susan. I watched the video and was outraged what happened there. Regardless of one's position on Gay issues, that was beyond inexcusable. It just continues to show us how militant these folks are.

I agree with Sherri on this one! Anyone reading Haley knows she if full of hatred for those that don't agree with her. You will see she is now only posting comments that are in agreement with her hate.

I just watched the video. It is frightening and made me cry. What will the next four years bring? Oh Susan! We must pray and be wise, and yes! we must shepherd our kids hearts (and spend time on our knees for our kids)...I regret I didn't spend more time on my knees for my three oldest - learn from my mistakes sweet friend - pray! Pray! Pray!

Susan,

It's so sad what our society has becoming and will continue to become. No respect for elders is something huge in my book of attrocities. I thank God everyday for the time he gave me with my grandmother, and had that been her that was being abused like that, I don't think I could have contained myself. It's hard to remain in God's grace when the darkness seems to envelope us as times.

Thank you for speaking your heart.

I think Haley is actually helping spread the word of this terrible event that happened to this older woman. I would never have seen this if it hadn't been for the link on Haley's blog. She is helping to get the message out she actually wanted to squelch. Thanks Susan!!

Thank you for speaking TRUTH! It breaks my heart to see our country, that once greatly respected godly values, turn to darkness...and that our kids are growing up in it.

I am thankful to know that there are people like you who stand in agreement with God's Word...I proudly join you in that stand sister!

I too made it here from Haley's blog. I am also a conservative, also a Christian, yet I find it disgusting that the idea of conservative christian in the "name of God" seem to be protesting the love between two people. It's not about God, it's about fear. Who is to say your conservative values are more correct than a buddhist? Isn't God's true message one of love and understanding? Of which I see none in the conservative Christian movement in regards to gay rights.

Welcome Shelby (or is it Michael?)
Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

If so, I'll be happy to delete this comment along with your previous one.

Assuming it's ok, would you mind giving your definition of what a Christian is?

How do you become one?

or

In your opinion are we all "automatically" Christians?

Did you watch the entire video of the elderly woman at the Prop. 8 protest? If so, would you consider what happened to her ok - or would it be considered a "hate crime"?

If the situation was reversed, would it be considered a "hate crime" if conservative/ and or Christian protesters attacked a G*y activist in a similar manner?

Forgive me if I'm confused a bit, but could you clarify this quote in your comment above- " I find it disgusting that the idea of conservative christian in the "name of God" seem to be protesting the love between two people".

Are you saying the elderly woman had no right to publicly exercise her religious/ conservative etc.. beliefs and it was OK for the G*y activists to physically and verbally attack her and destroy the cross she was carrying?

Again, if you prefer not to answer these questions, I'll be happy to delete your comment and this one. I am just curious as to your thoughts on this.

Even though I disagree with her position, I agree that what happened to Ms. Burgess is shameful. Neither side has a monopoly on anger and hostility. For example, take a look at this recent news story:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081115/ap_on_re_us/obama_racial

It left me disgusted and shaking my head.

I came by way of Sherri's blog; I noticed you in the comments talking about this situation. I just watched the video on "Way of The Master" - and was sickened.
It's so interesting how angry/violent others can get over issues such as this one - what times we are living in. I just don't know what else to say......I am speechless.
I have one comment for you:
you GO girl!!!!
Linking arms with you......
Blessings on you ~

First, thanks for the comment on my blog.

Second, why do you spell G*y like that? Is it so hard for you to even type the word Gay?

I do think that if the situation were reversed it would be a hate crime and it is disturbing to see that happened to say the least.

I think it is important to remember that in every situation, no matter what you believe or stand for, there will be people that take it to the absolute extreme.

ie - Not all Muslims are the terrorists some of the conservative's would want us to believe. Not all homosexuals are going to attack a 70 year old and not all Christians believe the hate crime bill should be stopped (as the person I came across does) These are extremes.

I hope you are not assuming that ALL homosexuals would treat someone like that. If so, that is equally as sad.

The elderly woman had every right to exercise her religious beliefs, just as the homosexuals activists had every right to exercise theirs. Unfortunately "a few bad apples spoils the bunch." I know plenty of homosexual couples that are peaceful, loving people who just want to be able to spend the rest of their lives with the person they love. Why is that so hard for people to understand and accept.

Hi "Nash",
a quick note to you concerning your comment about the spelling of G*y. Can you tell me why some will intentionally not publish the word God and spell it G*d? Perhaps answering your question with another question will explain all.
